Even though donning a hat might not be so much of a necessity but it is only wise that those who love to have one (hat) on, adhere to certain etiquettes [that are required of them] as they flaunt their hat style. Although wearing a hat can look cool on you; knowing what to do [with your hat] at different points in time makes you appear cooler. This is why it is incumbent on you to don a hat with attitude- and that means committing your heart to the hat on your head.

First off, I will like to briefly touch on the choice of hat: hats are often seen as predominantly 'casual'- that's a reality that cannot be denied. Nonetheless, that you have a suit on does not mean you cannot don a hat- a Fedora will do the trick on you while hats such as 'the beanie', 'flat top' or 'porkpie' should do for a casual outlook.

Knowing where/when to get your hat off

As earlier emphasized some occasions require that you take your hat off. So, know when the time is right to 'hat off':

  • During formal events such as parade, recitation of the national anthem, wedding processions and such like.
  • At the onset of a conversation. This is viewed as a mark of respect for the one whom you are talking with.
  • Before entering certain churches.
  • While sitting at the meal table.

To sum it up, you should remove your hat when you are about going into any building except those considered as ''public areas''.

Again, you should lift your hat a bit [off your head] while greeting a person- especially one that is of a higher status than you are. And do not forget to doff your hat at the end of a stage performance as you take a bow.
